If properly designed and implemented, acid stimulation treatments provide a method for improving the productivity of oil and gas wells. The success of these treatments depends to a great extent upon proper acid selection and good treatment design. This can be accomplished only with a good understanding of the fundamental principles of acid stimulation. This paper reviews these important principles and includes descriptions of the basic concepts of damage removal, reservoir stimulation, acid reaction mechanisms, job design and diversion technology. Example field case histories are included to illustrate the benefits that can be derived from properly administered acid treatments.
