Abstract
Objectives/Scope: Currently Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) is facing a challenge in using the open-hole MSF completion which takes time for the packers to swell and has a potentiality to open multiple fractures between the swell packers during a stage pump job. Generation of more short fractures will lead to less efficiency in obtaining the targeted productivity/sustainability increase. The older frac method of plug and perf provides better frac geometry but is complex in execution and longer in duration. Therefore an improved completion technology "Cemented Fracturing Sleeves" was piloted which combines both advantages.
Methods, Procedures, Process: The pilot was implemented in two selected wells in North Kuwait oil field, where a frac Completion was lowered into the well with frac sleeves then hanged and cemented after which the inner completion is cleaned with CTU, then carried out the staged acid frac by opening the frac port using ball drop system. With each stage, a bigger ball was dropped to isolate the stage below it and open the port for further fracking. After all stages are fracked the ball and baffles were drilled, and the frac sleeves could be further shifted with a shifting tool to selectively open/close stage.
Results, Observations, Conclusions: The technology succeeded in achieving the success criteria of 85% frac sleeves opened while improving the frac geometry compared to the OH MSF. The execution time is reduced to 15 days compared to Plug and Perf Method of 45 days. It was observed that this technology and the quality of isolation between stages is dependent on good cementation of the completion assembly.
Novel/Additive Information: The execution methodology was improved based on the obstacle faced during execution, which significantly improves the success rate of implementation of the technology like pumping Acid spearhead prior to the main stimulation fluid as this Assist cement sheath and tight formation break down, and inclusion of cement retarder in displacement fluids to improve post cement cleanup inside the completion.
