The maturing of fields and the difficult access to new fields raises the importance of the improving utilization of assets and increasing production rates and recovery factors. In compression applications, from LNG to pipelines to refineries, there is growing demand for increased process and equipment reliability, efficiency, and operability. While traditional plant automation technologies have been adequate for basic safe and reliable functioning of many oil and gas production processes, they are challenged to meet the growing performance demands of modern production systems. This paper shows how the traditional plant control architecture is now changing to a new paradigm based on advanced automation technologies to meet these challenges. The paper illustrates advanced system implementations enabling improved operation of overall production plants.
