In 1994 Shell successfully drilled a horizontal well in the Niger Delta with the objectives of improving drainage of the major D3.1 reservoir and appraising the poorly defined eastern flank for structure and fluid content of the overlying D3.0 sand. The well was optimised by 3D reservoir and hydrocarbon modelling of these reservoirs. Over 50 MMstb of additional reserves were proved in the D3.0 appraisal objective.
