Zero discharge regulations for non-aqueous drilling fluids used in EPA Region 4 of the Gulf of Mexico have changed the way operators manage drilling fluid and cuttings waste handling and disposal, especially in deepwater. These regulations were considered heavily during the planning stages of two deepwater wells in Desoto Canyon. This paper describes the development and application of the unique cuttings transport and management project that resulted in two successful wells being drilled in EPA Region 4 with no spills, accidents, or negative impact to drilling operations. In addition, when compared to conventional skip-and-ship operations, this system eliminated over 500 crane picks during the course of the two wells. Accordingly, a detailed installation survey was conducted for the assigned drilling vessel
