Oil-based or synthetic based muds, which are necessary in some drilling situations, increase the difficulty of cleanup operations due the increased hazards these fluids pose to the environment. One chemical washing agent has been identified that demonstrates potential for successfully reducing the TPH content of oil-based mud cuttings to below the required level.
