Total idle well population in the United States, both regulated and unregulated, currently is estimated to be approximately 1,000,000 wells. Conventionally, creating an inventory, and designing and implementing abandonment programs where appropriate has required substantial manpower. Today's computer software and portable hardware has created an opportunity to better design, implement and track abandonment programs. This paper discusses the development of a field available package, which allows real time delivery at the field level while generating essential reports and tracking process.

This methodology was required to meet the following criteria:

  • Reduction of cost by 30%;

  • Minimal reliance on production personnel;

  • Real time delivery of progress reports; and,

  • Prompt delivery of regulatory reports.
