As environmental managers are faced with an ever-growing number of facilities and environmental regulations, many have opted to implement an environmental data management system. These systems are generally computer-based applications that track, calculate, and report emissions, track permit and regulatory requirements, determine applicability of regulations, track compliance activities, and warehouse pertinent documents. Development of a successful system requires significant planning and also requires that a company's business practices be integrated into the final product. This paper discusses the attributes of a successful system and provides a roadmap for their development and implementation.
