Abstract
Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited (EPNL) is committed to improving its environmental performance. This commitment reflects the increasing importance placed on the environment in society and changing expectations of corporate behaviour. These rapid changes, enabled by the sudden explosion in global communications technology, have been championed by pressure groups which have been influential.
EPNL has made many improvements to environmental performance and internally the environmental department is challenging old practices and priorities as well as educating and training staff in basic environmental awareness. However, many complex, inter-related factors have affected the pace of change including community development, government regulations and funding.
This paper examines these challenges, looks at what is being done to overcome them, and discusses outstanding issues and actions.
