Abstract
This paper highlights some recent global trends in regulatory development with respect to the control of major hazards from both a safety and an environmental perspective in particular those trends illustrating performance-orientated or goal- setting regimes are discussed. The aim of the paper is to focus on some of the common regulatory requirements and the use of hazard/risk assessment, safety management systems and emergency planning techniques to ensure compliance. The emphasis is on the use of pragmatic, experience-based methods. The impact of this new legislation on business is discussed, and potential spin-off benefits are identified. New regulation currently under development is also considered, and a view of potential future regulatory direction is presented.
