The Statfjord Field vas discovered in 1974. It turned out to be the largest oil field in the North Sea. The field straddles the Norwegian/United Kingdom borderline. The participants in the Statfjord Group are as follows:

Presently the recoverable reserves are estimated to 3,3 billion barrels of oil, and 75,13 MMM Sm3 of gas. The field is developed and operated under a Unitization Agreement between Norwegian and British interest owners. Mobil Exploration Norway Inc. was the operator till 1. January 1987, whereupon the operatorship was transferred to Statoil.

The field is developed by three fully integrated concrete gravity base platforms of the condeep type. Oil is lifted from the field by tankers through an offshore loading system. The gas is exported through two pipeline systems to continental Europe and United Kingdom respectively.
