The Public Inquiry into the Piper Alpha explosion and fire identified the major cause of death as being the inhalation of smoke. Accordingly, a recommendation was made that some form of smoke hood be provided for offshore workers. In the absence of any widely recognised standard for such protective equipment a project has been started to establish a specification for smoke hoods for offshore use. This paper reviews the challenge with which such devices must cope and briefly outlines the proposed standard.
