Oil contaminated cuttings brought ashore for disposal need to be processed. A range of processes is being evaluated and this paper reviews some early work on Microbiological decontamination in respect of the removal of mineral oil based drilling fluid from this material. The process has been demonstrated to be feasible with over 70% of the oil removed within a 24 hour incubation period. Further studies continue to optimise the process.
