The difficulties of demonstrating competency of drilling personnel are discussed as well as the opportunity to improve the level of competency assurance within the industry. The benefits of competency based training are explained in terms of cost effectiveness, practicality, safety and productivity. A brief description is given of the various competency assurance schemes, and an argument is put forward to develop internationally recognised standards of competency for the drilling industry.
