On-the-fly hydration of polymers used in water-based fracturing has been well accepted in the industry. Conventional technology to date has utilized a residence time of about 4 minutes to achieve this. In this paper, we describe a new concept based on high shear which reduces the residence time requirement to less than 20 seconds, which makes the system a real on-the-fly system. In addition, of the smaller residence time, minimizes the need for disposal of fluids in case of premature job termination.
