Prediction of performance of Separators and Gas Scrubbers is difficult with the traditional design methods - especially if inlet liquid loadings are high. BP Engineering has developed a novel Separator Design Program that can quantify the performance of both conventional and proprietary separation units.

The technique predicts the particle size distribution in the inlet pipework and determines the liquid Knock-Out in the vessel body. The quantity and size of remaining particles is calculated to enable the expected performance of the internals (Vanes, Cyclones or Demister Pad) to be estimated.

Initial verification work of this method by checking against existing operating units is now complete and a programme of further research work and development is in progress by BP Research, AEA-Harwell and BP Engineering.
