Detailed technical and market assessments are being conducted of five advanced industrial burner technologies: radiant, pulse combustion, catalytic, oxygen/gas, and plasma burners. Using a computer simulation model, advanced and conventional technologies are being compared in thirteen process heating applications to develop ten-year market estimates of installed heating capacity and to assess changes in natural gas consumption. Preliminary results project that with advanced technologies natural gas consumption in these applications will increase 50 percent to 3,000 trillion Btu/yr by 1997 and natural gas market share will increase from 45 to 60 percent. Without the advanced technologies, natural gas consumption is projected to be 280 trillion Btu/year lower.
