In the design of natural gas transmission facilities it is important to consider the time-varying nature of most gas demands. Steady-state analysis may or may not be adequate depending on both the characteristics of the demands and the transportation system. This paper attempts to point out the factors that are of importance as system loads change and quantify them where possible. Criteria for determining the appropriate analysis techniques are discussed along with an example of the relative impact of adding in-line compression versus additional pipeline.
