This paper reports the finding of a investigation carried out to evaluate the deformation characteristics of saturated sandstone aquifers in the Collie Coal Basin under conditions anticipated during dewatering operations.

A drained triaxial compression test technique for various combinations of confining pressure and back pressure was designed to examine the applicability of the effective stress theory suggested to Terzaghi (1), with particular reference to the Collie sandstone. Further, the results obtained were utilised to characterise the strength and deformability properties of the Collie sandstone.
