Generally several deformation and rupture mechanisms are involved in the problems of wellbore stability and reservoir behaviour. Adequate prognosis of the main mechanism responsible for an unexpected behaviour is a fundamental step in proposing a remedy which sometimes may be unusual or not conform to common practice but which has proven to be successful in several applications. This paper reviews and recalls some basic mechanism of wellbore instability until present overlooked and their practical consequences on the remedy to the problem. Another illustration is given by the various mechanisms involved in the reservoir behaviour of highly compactable material and the necessary evaluation of mechanisms involved for the prediction of significant movements.
