Abstract
The Santa Rosa Tar Sands Project involves strip mining of a surface deposit of oil impregnated sandstone at Santa Rosa, New Mexico. The ore is delivered to an extraction plant where it is crushed and the oil extracted using solvent and hot water. A clean damp sand residue is to be returned for back filling the mine (apart from the flue gases involved in untility requirements).
