Developing and maintaining high levels of crew expertise and awareness is vital to the productivity and safety of rig and platform operations. The effectiveness and longevity of onshore training can be enhanced through the use of training and simulation packages which staff and crews can use on demand at or near their work place. The widespread availability of, and familiarity with, personnel computers gives an ideal platform on which to build and operate such packages. In addition to the provision of basic training they also include performance enhancement so that both the user and supervisor can assess the levels of competence achieved. In addition to basic training the same platforms may be used as engineering aids, the simulators being used to assess the effect of changing parameters or methods of operation.
