An early form of the digital petroleum engineering career track has been in place at ExxonMobil's* Upstream Technical Computing (UTC) organization for over 15 years. Like the technology they advance, deploy, and support, the roles and career path have grown, evolved, and matured into a viable and fulfilling professional track. This paper will provide an overview of UTC's early career development system and outline some of the successes and challenges to developing new hire digital petroleum professionals. It will describe some of the early career development methods and programs that ExxonMobil's UTC organization utilizes to ensure that new hire support engineers are quickly developed and empowered to make meaningful contributions in the digital oilfield.
