The equilibrium equations for a helically buckled tubing with weight are solved by an approximate method that produces a generalized form of Lubinski's force-pitch relationship. This new solution provides a method for evaluating the range of application of Lubinski's results. A new definition of the neutral point is derived based on a contact force criterion. A numerical analysis of a cantilever end constraint at the packer is used to evaluate the generalized buckling solution. This analysis puts the Lubinski solution in a technical context that allows further developments, such as tapered strings, inclined wellbores, and friction.
