Enterprise Oil pic currently is involved as operator for a number of high temperature, high pressure wells in the Central North Sea to depths in excess of 17,000 ft (5200m). A crucial factor in the successful design and drilling of such wells is the casing design particularly in light of the severe requirements of the UK Department of Energy.

This paper examines how the casing design for such wells has been optimised by Enterprise Oil by the use of 110,000 psi (758MPa) minimum internal yield strength, sour service casing. In addition, the specifications for the manufacture and inspection of such casing are reviewed and a discussion on the limitations of the existing NACE guidelines presented.
