The paper describes a modern approach to the operation of drilling fluid at the rig site in which the drilling contractor furnished a total fluids management package inclusive of engineering services, computerised reporting techniques plus all required solids control equipment. The fluids engineering included both drilling fluid engineering and solids control optimisation with the required monitoring of oil based fluid usage and oil discharge to the marine environment.
