Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the comprehensive Management System & Design Guidelines created to safely implement Surface BOPs in variety of environments. In particular, the Management System enables the use of the Surface BOP in environments other than the benign met ocean/formation conditions where these systems have been deployed to date.
The components of this Management System are: Introduction, Background and Philosophy; Performance Standards; Performance Assurance Process; Equipment Specifications and Verification; Performance Assurance Objectives; Surface BOP Design Guidelines & Governing Standards, Risk Management, Operating Procedures and Maintenance / Inspection Procedures
The paper concludes that use of such a comprehensive Management System enables the Surface BOP (SBOP) to be deployed in many environments.
SBOP technology significantly reduces the deck loading for rigs when compared to using conventional marine risers in deepwater and enables the use of smaller rigs in deepwater. The potential cost savings are large.
