Fatigue life management of Coiled Tubing is widely applied in the industry today and this has led to a high reliability of Coiled Tubing used in the servicing of oil and gas wells. However, Coiled Tubing failures have not been totally eradicated from the industry and this paper examines some of the causes.

During a two year period, from January 1996 to January 1998, all coiled tubing, used by BJ/Nowsco which has failed before its predicted fatigue life has been examined to determine the nature and cause of the failure. This paper reviews some of these failures and highlights a trend which became apparent.

This trend towards a predomination of corrosion initiated failures has led to a study of prevention techniques and this work is also reviewed in this paper.
