Because the dependency of compaction on the rate of depletion is ignored, currently used procedures for predicting compaction are inaccurate. A partly analytical, partly empirical model is presented for calculating oil and gas production, subsurface compaction, and surface subsidence from compacting reservoirs with rate-dependent compressibilities and all major drive mechanisms active. A compacting Bolivar coast reservoir is simulated with excellent results.

Limitations include zero water production, piston-like gas and water influx, and negligible gravity drainage.
