Following the 2010 Macondo Prospect oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the more stringent regulations for offshore oil and gas operations required an entirely new approach to wellbore cleanout ahead of the completion phase. With all previous practices and chemistries effectively ended, the task was to develop a new, reliable, sufficiently dense, environmentally friendly, clear-brine displacement system that would address the challenges of cleaning out aqueous- and non-aqueous-based drilling fluids as well as perform in the elevated pressures and temperatures of ultra-deepwater operations in the Gulf of Mexico, Brazil, and West Africa.
