An SPE Task Force (Task Force) was established to define the criteria for minimum competency for petroleum engineers. The original scope of the task force was to apply minimum competency requirements to the U.S. Principles and Practice Examination for Petroleum Engineers (Exam). However, the resulting criteria can be used in more global endeavors. This includes the establishment of professional guidelines for continued professional development for petroleum engineers as well as integration with petroleum engineering degree curricula. This systematic approach will help foster efforts to elevate engineering to a recognized profession such as law or medicine.
