Abstract

A water injection booster pump system using a below ground "can" Electrical Submersible Centrifugal pump (ESP) will be described. This pump, an integral part of the Milne Point Unit water injection system, is the first such installation on the North Slope of Alaska. The can ESP was chosen as a speedy, flexible, low footprint, cost effective solution to increase water injection. The pump successfully increased water injection capacity to over 20,000 bpd at 3200 psi discharge, an increase from 8000 bpd at 2600 psi As a result of the project, reservoir pressure and oil production has increased substantially in the fault blocks receiving additional water injection support. The paper will provide an overview of the project design and installation, with emphasis on downhole aspects of the pump design (geotechnical, ESP, completion).
