Underbalanced perforating is generally accepted as the petroleum industry standard for perforating. This paper presents the concept, the mechanics, the procedures, potential applications, and the results of perforating by a "new" convention of perforating that incorporates the use of overpressured wellbores. This procedure can also be used in wells with existing perforations if an overpressured surge is used. Oryx has successfully used overbalanced perforating and overbalanced surging procedures in more than 50 wells. This paper will highlight some of the case histories that have used these techniques.
