A gas kick taken in a deep well drilled with oil-base mud is simulated with a new model. In comparison to one taken in water-base mud, this kick shows relatively small increases in annulus pressure and pit level as the gas is circulated to the surface. Solubility of the gas in the drilling mud is the key to understanding these measurements. Even though the formation permeability is the only adjustable parameter in the model, the calculated surface pressure is very close to the measured pressure throughout the slow-circulation phase.
