The difficult economic conditions of the oil industry in the 1980's provided Schlumberger with an opportunity to enhance the technical and professional expertise of our personnel. This paper describes two major programs initiated during these economically depressed times -the Advanced Degree Program and the Summer Petroleum Engineering Seminar. Both proved to be successful to Schlumberger and the individuals involved. The Advanced Degree Program was an educational leave of absence granted for one year to selected field personnel. The Summer Petroleum Engineering Seminar, administered in conjunction with the University of Texas at Austin, was a 12-week program of intense instruction for field engineers in applicable topics of petroleum engineering. Included in this paper will be the philosophy of establishing the programs, costs incurred, and the benefits gained.
