This paper compares instructor led training versus classroom inversion for two courses taught at Exxon Mobil Corporation ("ExxonMobil"). We discuss training elements such as total training hours, pre/post-test results, and student satisfaction surveys. The most important findings are:

  • Student and supervisor behaviors need to change when learning is transformed from an event to an extended journey

  • Greater effort is required to prepare for and monitor the progress of students

  • Classroom efficiencies can be realized and the quality of instruction enriched with inversion

  • The effectiveness of learning was comparable to that of a conventional classroom
