This paper provides and over view of the risk management and ALARP considerations/theory as applied to the safety regime highlighting principles that can be applied to environmental ALARP.

The paper introduces the concept of Best Available Techniques (BAT) as an equivalent and established concept to ALARP in environment.

It provides advice on the approaches to be taken, level of study and accountabilities for organising, assessing and sign off. The approaches proposed focus on simple assessment where possible and a demonstration that the practices proposed meet ALARP criteria and allows flexibility in approach, and is therefore not over prescriptive.

When considering ALARP it should be remembered that it is intended to deliver a process that demonstrates that we have challenged whether our current designs and operations are sufficiently protective of the environment.
