Oil and Gas Exploration and Production (E & P) work activity has inherent hazards in its nature of operations. Many previous catastrophic incidents have left a mark in the public’s memory. In recent years, younger and inexperienced workers have joined the industry, which has not made it any easier to curve-down the trends of incidents and the related consequences, e.g. personnel injury, fatality, asset damages and environmental impacts.

As an operator in the E & P business, it is our duty to ensure workforce competency, particularly for workers going offshore. Specific Safety Training plays a key role in the delivery of the many mandatory safety topics. But how best to make subject delivery understandable, interesting, efficient and even cost effective?

Traditional Classroom / Safety Trainer techniques have been used over the years but difficulties can be experienced when encouraging (as compared to enforcing) existing staff to attend mandatory refresher training and stimulating the right atmosphere for new hires. Various options were considered but the option that appeared most suitable for our needs was E-learning.

The purpose of this document therefore, is to provide a more detailed understanding of the Safety E-learning option, the applications, commercial considerations and problems involved with its implementation.
