Abstract

The offshore environment is a unique working place. Workers must live and work together for at least 14 days or more. They are faced with long working hours, shift work, and the feelings of being separated from their families and friends. There can be boredom when daily assignments become routine.Acknowledging these facts, Unocal Thailand Health and Medical Services has organized a special program to harmonize living and working offshore to create a better working atmosphere. The Offshore Run, a special charity event sponsored by the company, not only promotes healthy exercise but also provides an opportunity to join together to achieve a common milestone. This allows employees to demonstrate their unity, commitment and spirit for a worthy cause.

Background:

Working offshore is a special kind of work. Workers must live and work together for at least 14 days or more. They face many challenging situations such as long working hours, shift work, working in severe weather conditions or extreme heat, and often performing boring and routine work.

Health is also a major concern. With easy access to abundant food, there is tendency to overeat which can lead to overweight, the starting point of various illnesses. Only a few employees engage in regular exercise, even though everybody understands the benefits.

Acknowledging these facts, Unocal Thailand Health and Medical Services has organized a special program to promote physical and mental health, as well as spiritual well- being to achieve harmony in living and working together. The

Offshore Run (Offshore Marathon) a special campaign first launched in 2001. Since then, this program has been conducted annually, with the generous support of the company which donates 10 Baht (25 cents) to a selected charity for each kilometer run.

Objectives:

The objectives of the annual Offshore Run/Marathon are:

  1. To improve the health of our offshore staff by stimulating their interest in exercise.

  2. To create an activity that will boost the morale of our employees.

  3. To unite all staff and create a spirit of teamwork by participating in an activity to show social responsibility.

  4. To raise funds for selected charitable organizations.

Procedure:

The Offshore Run/Marathon is a one-month event which is not limited to running alone. Other activities include jogging, walking, and cycling, with the distance traveled converted into kilometers. The program includes individual health screening before it starts.

The daily distance achieved is recorded, as are cumulative totals.

The incentives for program participation are:

  1. T-shirt souvenirs for all staff who complete 20 Km.

  2. Trophies for the field with the highest number of participants.

Trophies for the winner and the runner-up of the two age-groups:

  1. 45 and over,

  2. Under 45.

Results:

The program has shown satisfactory results, with a very good participation rate. On average, employees spend an hour after work for 14 consecutive days to complete the activities. The table below summarizes the program achievements from 2001–2004.
