Oil and gas wells that are drilled into deep, overpressured sediments frequently encounter slow penetration rates that result in high drilling costs. A cooperative effort between industry and university researchers has begun to study this problem and seek potential solutions. The current work has identified characteristics of the problem, its economic significance, its possible causes, and the best historical field practices for addressing it.
