Nowadays exploration for hydrocarbons in bazhen formation has become one of the main task of oil industry in Russia.

Today, production of these types of hydrocarbon in the world is greater than 5 %, and it shows steady growth. Resource potential estimates vary up to 10 billion tons, which indicate the prospects of this type of hydrocarbons. To date, taking into account the tax benefits for oil production from non-conventional sources of hydrocarbons becomes the most promising for all Russian vertically integrated oil companies. A large spread over the area within the KHMAO and successful pilot projects with commercial oil flow create the preconditions for a high probability of an early start of a large-scale oil production, with application of the latest technologies. Production potential of the Bazhenov Formation in Russia in 2020 is estimated at 15-20 million tons.

JSC "GazpromNeft" is paying a great attention to the development of this area. Assessing the potential of the Bazhenov and abalak formations in Palyanovskaya area of Krasnoleninskoye oil field – is one of the company's projects to explore the possibilities of unconventional hydrocarbon reserves.

Palyanovskaya area of Krasnoleninskoye oil field is located in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District on the territory of Oktyabrskiy region (Fig. 1). Within close proximity there are also developed oil fields: Em- Egovskoye, Talin (west) and Kamennaya area (south- east) of Krasnoleninskoye field.
