Abstract
Russia has opened up a new era in the development and exploitation of deep-water marine resources. This has meant that the questions of safety, of the ecological impact of similar mega projects and their possible effects on the environment, have become more acute and more current. The worldwide experience of drilling deep-water wells has shown that it is possible to avoid negative consequences with the help of various methods and technologies, including the application of a ‘Riserless Mud Recovery’ or ‘RMR’ system. This paper considers the features of RMR technology, its advantages, its operating principles and its track record in Russia.
