In the arctic environment the installation of pipelines offshore and in the area between land and sea is a challenge. The remote logistics, the short and unpredictable season and the trenching and burial in often not well known possibly permafrost soils require novel approaches all under the requirement of leaving a minimal environmental footprint. Based on the experience Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) has in the installation of pipelines and pipeline trenching and studies performed for the Baydaratskaya Bay crossing and for the Beaufort Sea, approaches will be presented for the installation of pipelines in arctic and extreme environments. They are based on recent studies partly done in-house and partly for and with industry clients.
