This paper seeks to discuss the knowledge transfer for only three of the present initiatives adopted by the company for the development of operational staff. There are other initiatives in place for the knowledge sharing and transfer at Regional and corporate level. However, these are not referred to in this paper.

This paper will focus on the Knowledge transfer at Rig site and locations, because this program proven to be sample and effective.

The three programs as follow:

  1. Knowledge Transfer Program at Rig Site

  2. Knowledge Sharing Through Innovation Awards Program

  3. Knowledge Transfer Through the Lessons Learnt Program

Knowledge Transfer is an effective way to let people talk and listen to one another. Successful Knowledge Transfer, however, involves interactions between people which lead, hopefully, to:

  • Performance improvement,

  • Innovative ideas,

  • High morale and ultimately

  • Realization of the "learning organization" goal.

Knowledge Transfer is a critical tool for:

  • Individual self-development.

  • Team work enhancement.

  • Organizational development.

Samples of advantage observed during the Knowledge Transfer:

  • It provides juniors a rationale behind instructions of "DOs & DON'Ts".

  • It breaks the ice between experienced seniors & juniors

  • It is a team building session.

  • Juniors become more involved and/or engaged as they can relate to the whole process and recognize relevance of their own roles.

  • It provides motivation to juniors as they realize that drilling business is not just a physical job but it involves a lot of technology & calculations.

  • Encourages crew to ask questions which is the way to gain knowledge.

  • Provides opportunities to enrich staff knowledge by sharing their previous experiences in other companies.

  • Contributes to the enhancement of team spirit.

  • Facilitates for better focus on key and critical issues.

  • Provides opportunities for clarifications and corrections of misunderstandings.

  • Provide bases for correct standardized work instruction and job safety analysis.

  • Knowledge transfer is a tool for onsite continuous improvement.

Knowledge Transfer processes at Rig sites and locations in 2011 involved the following:

  • Total number of Rigs & Barge: 31

  • Total conducted sessions: 1275

  • Total duration: 462 hours

  • Total attendees: 20564

A credibility and validation monitoring mechanism ensured that:

  • Copies of approved and proposed presentations were sent to technical authority for verifications/comments

  • After due review, presentations were sent back to the original presenter for final review

  • Reviewed final copy of the presentation was finally included in the Knowledge Transfer data bank with note stating that respective presenter was solely accountable for the credibility and validity of the information included.
