The world should be grateful to those who work in the oil and gas industry, particularly to those in the upstream sector, who everyday encounter the challenges posed by the barren desert, the swamps and jungles, the offshore storms and the technological complexity of deepwater exploration and production. All this in order to ensure that oil is available to the consumer whenever and wherever it is wanted. In achieving this objective the industry has an outstanding record of efficiency. Yet public gratitude and popularity are not sentiments generally associated with the oil and gas industries. There are several explanations for this.
