As oil and gas reserves become more sour, the need for components that can withstand operation in contact with these process fluids is increasing. Current magnetic bearing technology does not meet the requirements for direct application in a wet sour gas environment. Magnetic bearings developed with components meeting NACE guidelines will eliminate the need for additional equipment and make operations more maintenance friendly and less costly. Developing magnetic bearings for wet sour gas applications raises several challenges, especially finding materials with good corrosion resistance and magnetic properties.

This paper covers details of the material selection, validation testing and field commissioning for this application.
