Robustness is the ability of a system to maintain specified features and minimal performance under specified perturbation. This definition of robustness is introduced and it is illustrated through several examples. Some of the difficulties encountered with determining appropriate levels of robustness are discussed and a design framework is introduced as one possible method of overcoming these difficulties. This framework is intended to be flexible enough to be used in multiple regulatory environments world-wide.
