Issues arising from mooring system ageing and life extension present significant challenges for the offshore oil and gas industry. The mooring system for a floating production unit (FPU) is a safety critical structural element. Unfortunately, there currently is little guidance on how to assess the fitness of an aged mooring system for extended service.
This paper reviews recent advances in inspection, monitoring, risk evaluation and life prediction. Example government regulatory requirements (Norway, UK) for life extension are reviewed. Some recent advances in mooring integrity management are described that can aid in performing life extension assessments. Examples of successful mooring life extension programs are also summarized.
