Dynamics of a 300 meter long flexible jumper vertically dropped in 1300 meter water depth is investigated. Nonlinear dynamic substructuring and reduced order nonlinear dynamic models are utilized to significantly mitigate computational difficulties associated with this large order highly nonlinear dynamic simulation. It is demonstrated that the jumper undergoes large complex deformations throughout its descent to the sea floor with associated buckling, post-buckling, and phases of hydro elastic instability. Maximum excursions and kinetic energies are computed in order to assess the adequacy of initially prescribed installation safe handling zone.
