This paper describes a method to reduce cost and improve efficiency of offshore wind farms. The method employs the use of dual, counter-rotating blades equipped with special tubercle clad blades. Power is transmitted from the blade assembly to the platform deck via a 90° magnetic translating system. The generator, transformer, switchgear and controls are mounted at deck level; hence the weight and footprint of the nacelle are greatly reduced. The Advanced Offshore Wind System also employs a tri-pod tower unit and caisson support structure. The vertical-mounted power transmission shaft is constructed of a carbon composite material having steel bearing areas. The result of the various components operating as a unit greatly reduces cost, lowers maintenance cost and provides more deliverable power than conventional offshore wind systems.
